My Top Style Icon Series - Buffy Summers

Everyone has style icons, if its an actress, a model, singer, people that at some point in their life has shaped their style, pulled inspiration from their style, and just all around inspire them in different ways to express themselves, at least that's how it was for me.

Even though a good part of my childhood I wanted to be a spice girl, most of my style icons, were people on tv shows, movies and even comic books and cartoons. I have shown it recently in some OOTD's, but I wanted to make a list, I sat here thinking, "Can I do a top 5? top 10? How can I do this?" But then I thought, every person on my list had inspired me in many ways, if it was a stage in my life, or helped make me into the person I am today. I have had a pretty big list of females I looked up to in fashion and even just in my daily life.

So I decided to give each person their own post. Because some of them are characters, from tv shows, movies, cartoons. Some of them are actual people, so rather than make it one long post, I wanted to give each one its own spot light, and thats where this starts. So today, I focus on one of my first "style icons" Buffy Summers, yes the Slayer herself. Be prepared, there are some young pictures of yours truely about to be shared, you have been warned.

Being a kid in the late 90's I fell in love with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It was actually the first fandom I got myself into. Things like Star Wars and Batman I sorta fell into because my cousins, or dad watched. But Buffy was my own thing. Which is why I think till this day it sort of sits special with me. It was my thing, when Buffy came on I watched it (soon my mom got into it and would watch it with me) and it was the first big series I watched from start to finish. And I wanted to be Buffy Summers.

I was really a tomboy as a kid, having mostly boy cousins, I didn't really want to be super girly. My hair was really long and kept int a pony tail most of the time, and the  summer before junior high my dad told me he'd take me to get a real hair cut, anything I wanted as long as it would make me feel pretty. It was his way of helping me break out of my shy shell and feel more grown up hitting the 7th grade. What did I do? Well I wanted my hair cut like Buffy had it in season two. (at the time was the season that just ended) So I found a picture which was in Teen Beat (i remember this so clearly) of that hair cut, and I got my first real hair style. I cut off all of my hair, which was a big deal. And I cried, happy tears because I felt so pretty. And I was so happy. Sure i wasn't Buffy Summers, but hey maybe I could find myself an Angel. A tween could dream!

Through out Jr high my mom started catching on, if it was something related to Buffy in an outfit I would wear it. It was her way of getting me to wear "girlie" clothes. I tease her till this day that she would watch all tapes I would record of all the episodes  (yes i was that obsessed I recorded them every week) to get ideas for outfits so I could break out of my baggy jeans and t-shirt phase. And it worked. I wish I had more pictures of it, I went looking for my 7th grade photo where I have the buffy hair cut, and a silmiar ourtfit she got me of an outfit buffy wore while training with Giles (it was a cranberry hoodie and pants with a black tank top). She has it so if I get it soon i'll edit the post with it here, until then, we have this gem....

Its kind of a shock now, but I HATED wearing dresses, HATED it. You couldn't pay me to wear a dress, that is where I drew my line. But my mom, in all of her awesomeness was on a mission, she wanted me to wear a dress, my mom found a dress that was like it and had one of our family friends fix the dress, so  that was just like the dress Buffy wore to homecoming. I told her if I could have that dress I would wear it. She wouldn't let me wear the jacket, as much as I pleaded, and it was a no no to the cross bow, but I got my Buffy dress, and my mom got pictures of me in a dress. We even took a picture to the hair stylist of buffy's hair from that ep and had my hair done like that for my night. I was happy and my mom was happy. And I have a awesome story of the time my mom got me a dress like Buffy Summers. And she was really the first person I watned to dress up as and be like. She was sort of the reason my style changed from tom boy, to a bit more girlie. And pretty much why I wanted her to be the first part of my style icons and get her own post, because it was a big part of my life, and got me through a big change.

I hope you guys enjoyed this, and look foward to who is next on my list! Can you guess who else is on my list? It may be a shocker!

Thanks for reading!
Ashley
